There kind of was. Despite (in my opinion) Victor and Yuri have a very explicit romance, things were never addressed/shown explicitly. They didn’t technically kiss on screen, it was censored by the hug. They didn’t technically get married, they just exchanged rings. Stuff like that. From my perspective, their relationship was painfully obvious, but when it was airing I did see discourse online about whether Victor had feelings for Yuri and stuff along that line, so clearly there were some people who didn’t necessarily pick up on that.
This is speculation, but my guess is there was some friction between staff. Some probably wanted to focus on the ice skating and sports aspect (which would also make it appeal to a wider audience, and thus hopefully make more money, which was another issue mentioned in the article) and some who wanted to keep heavily portraying the LGBTQ themes.

Sinceramente, considerando che Mappa ha chiuso da pochissimo il suo studio per gli anime BL, sto iniziando a pensare che ci siano molti contrari ai temi LGBTQ nello studio.
Rimane un'occasione sprecata perchè stiamo parlando di uno degli shows più popolari e di maggior successo degli ultimi decenni
