Biografia:: Masamune Shirow ha studiato pittura ad olio all'accademia di belle arti di Osaka. Mentre frequentava l'università ha sviluppato un interesse per i manga che l'ha portato a creare la sua prima opera completa, Black Magic, che venne poi pubblicata nella fanzine Atlas. La sua storia è stata notata da Aoki Harumichi, presidente della casa editrice Seishinsha, il quale gli ha proposto di pubblicarlo.

Il risultato è Appleseed, la cui ambientazione e trama diventano un fenomeno e gli permettono di vincere il Seiun award come miglior manga nel 1986. Masamune Shirow pubblica Dominion e un paio di anni dopo si mette all'opera su Ghost in the shell.
